Ammonia can affect fish growth, osmotic pressure balance, metabolic activities, and can cause some damage to fish. It is necessary to test ammonia for your fish regularly.
         
A new aquarium should be tested at least 3 times a week until the ammonia level measures 0 parts per million (ppm) or mg/L. In established aquariums, ammonia should be tested at least 1 time a week to make sure it is at a safe level.
